Finding the Joy in Physical Fitness

You may be thinking that if you are either in a wheelchair or walk with crutches that workouts are out of the question. That is where you would be wrong! Disabled people just do them differently. For example, instead of running on a treadmill wheelchair users might push their chairs around the neighborhood.

Fitness has always been something I have struggled with. After high school, I started going on walks but they weren’t short walks they were two-mile walks. Doesn’t sound difficult right? Well for me it was! I was over-exerting myself to the point when I was always tired and had intense back pain all the time. So I thought to myself there has to be a better way.

And there was! I no longer go on walks, I follow along with different routines I can find on YouTube and love it! Before I just did it because I knew in the back of my mind it was good for me, but I didn’t know how to properly exercise without hurting myself. Now I actually enjoy taking care of my body because I’ve learned so many fun and easy ways to do so.

If you are wondering what I’ve been watching, I found a fitness channel called Blogilates. It’s basically Pilates with pop music. When people ask me what I do for exercise I tell them that, sometimes they give me a blank stare because a lot of people don’t know what Pilates is. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, it’s a full body workout but it mainly focuses on core work.

I also watch a channel called Rebecca Louise Fitness. I primarily watch that when I want to focus on strength training. Blogilates mainly teaches you how to work out without using equipment, so I found it helpful to watch a second channel that teaches a different approach.

If you are in a wheelchair my advice is to stick to strength training. Lifting weights is a great form of exercise.

So, the bottom line is just doing what makes you happy as far as exercise goes and don’t stress over it. Some people actually can’t work out and would love to. Do what you can if you have a disability, you can’t do anything more.
