When you are disabled it is harder to make friends than if you were abled. People with disabilities, are judged before you even have had a conversation with them. A lot of the time an abled person will see a wheelchair and judge that person. I will share with you some of my personal experiences that I have had with making friends while being disabled.
Most kids will tell you their favorite part of school is lunch. Well, that was probably my least favorite part of the school day. The reason why it was my least favorite part of the day was that most of the time my friends didn’t have the same lunch as I did, and I ate by myself. Whenever I tried to make friends people would look at me like I was an alien. They could not get past the chair. It’s an object, all it does is help a person with a disability get around! There is no possible way you will know anything about a person unless you talk to them. That is why judging them based on the fact they are in a wheelchair is wrong! Try to get to know them and then make a decision on whether or not you like them! If you are able to do that you may discover that having a friendship with a person with a disability is not as scary as you think it is.
Blogging has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! I have made tons of friends through blogging! This is why the blogging community is a great option for me. Most bloggers give me a chance before they decide they don’t want to be friends with me! Sometimes I get frustrated with certain things that only a person with a disability would understand the nice thing about blogging is that there are tons of disability bloggers that you can connect with!
A lot of people with disabilities have either very few friends or none at all. That can totally change if abled people would just accept them for who they are and not just shut them out because they are too scared to approach them. If that is your reasoning just ask questions I am sure the person with a disability will give you some answers to put your mind at ease, just don’t ask anything too personal. Some people with disabilities get depressed because they have no friends this has to stop! A lot of people with disabilities either will only have friends with a disability or have very few friends in general. Online friends are common when you have a disability because you have a really hard time getting accepted but don’t have that problem online! An abled person may have some problems with getting friends when going to a new school but not nearly as much as a person with a disability would. Next time you see a person with a disability that looks kind of lonely go up and talk to them they may have no friends, you may make their day!
