Do you workout for the right reasons?

It’s that time of year again when everyone is putting in extra hours at the gym to try and get that “summer body”. Unfortunately, most of those people are working out for the wrong reasons and are only going to the gym to get six-pack abs or a bigger butt and will most likely stop going by the end of summer! Fitness should be done as a choice and for the right reasons because when you start getting so obsessed with your physical appearance that is when it takes the fun out of fitness and can become harmful.

Working out can be fun but when you are working out for vanity reasons it takes all the fun out of working out because you aren’t doing because you want to but because you feel you have to look a certain way. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a “summer body” because everyone can always make improvements in their physical health no matter how fit you are and working out for vanity reason is a waste of time and energy. There are so many reasons why I don’t work out for vanity reasons so today I thought I would share a few of them with you!

Lacks purpose- If one of your fitness goals is to get six-pack abs you need to rethink that goal because you will eventually get to it and ask yourself now what?  When getting six-pack abs is one of your goals you are not working out because you want to but because you feel you have to look a certain way and once you achieve that goal you will wonder why you need to continue working out. Working out can be fun but when your goals lack purpose it can be really difficult to motivate yourself to want to continue your workout routine. Workout because you want to see what your body can do not punish your body for all the things you shouldn’t have eaten. The moment you change your mindset and focus more on getting stronger and less on how you look in the mirror is when you will do great things and find purpose in your workouts!  For continued growth, you should always be making new goals for yourself so don’t ever stop just because you have reached one of your goals.

Takes the fun out of working out– When you workout out because you want to look a certain way often times it can take the fun out of working out! Most people who become obsessed with wanting to look a certain way do crazy workouts and follow a very strict diet because they will do whatever it takes to get those results but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are enjoying the journey. Fitness can be fun but when you are following a very strict diet and workout routine it takes all the fun out of fitness because you are not doing it for the right reasons but because you feel you have to. Once you get those results you will most likely fall back and all your progress will be lost. Find a nutrition and fitness routine that works best for you that doesn’t feel super restricted so you can stay on track and get those results!

What to do instead:

Workout for strength: Everyone has different body types and fit can look different on everybody so instead of making your goals to look a certain way make your goal to get stronger! There is nothing more satisfying than when you are able to lift more or do more pushups so why don’t you focus on improving your strength instead of trying to look like your favorite celebrity! Most all, celebrities follow a very specific diet and have fitness trainers so having your goal to look like them is very unrealistic so why not make your own goals and crush them.

Stop comparing- You should never compare your fitness journey to somebody on Instagram because you never know if they are doing something that you aren’t or maybe wouldn’t want to do. Most people will only tell you the highlights of their life on social media and will never tell you what they are struggling with because those things just aren’t as appealing   It may seem like your favorite Instagrammer has a perfect life but if you knew what went on in their life outside of there social media you may realize they have a lot of the same struggles as you do!

Working out for vanity can be dangerous and take all the fun out of working out! Workout out for strength because you can always improve your physical health and when you become so obsessed with wanting to look a certain way you will become wildly unmotivated to workout. There is nothing wrong with wanting six-pack abs but don’t make that the only reason you go to the gym because it won’t last long if that is your only goal! If you are disabled and get depressed because you can’t work out and get that “summer body” you need to stop obsessing over it because it doesn’t exist!

There are many different body types and if you can work out you can always improve your physical fitness but if you can’t don’t worry about it. Workout for the right reasons not because you need to look a certain way because the reality of it is we are all a work in progress. Would you rather have six abs or good physical health? If you ask me I would much rather have good physical health than six-pack-abs! Why do you workout?
